For retired servers, you can keep the data or remove  it.. However, since the local appliance has limited space it is expected that it would only keep your production servers and the most recent data that you would use in case of a disaster scenario. Maintaining backups from retired servers might not leave enough space for your online machines and could get your Datto appliance full at some point, so we don’t recommend keeping these old backups stored for too long.

If the data needs to be kept, you can archive the server on the Datto, so the data could be stored but no new backups would run. For this procedure, follow the instructions below:

  • Over the Datto web portal, click on the Protect tab.
  • Scroll down the page and find the server in question.
  • Click on the Configure Agent Settings on the left.
  • Then scroll to the bottom of the page to the option Archive Agent.

If the data does not need to be stored, the server and the data can be removed completely by following the next steps:

  • Over the Datto web portal, click on the Protect tab.
  • Scroll down the page and find the server in question.
  • On the left side, choose the option Remove Agent.
  • Confirm the data deletion as requested.
